Hand therapy clinical placement request
Hi all,
Hope everyone is well. I am an occupational therapist looking to return to practice after 9 years. I would like to specialise in hand therapy, but am struggling to clinical placement experience. I am based in outer London near Amersham, but have a car, so not restricted too much in terms of location!
I have completed the BAHT level 1 in Hand Therapy (self funded).
Could any hand therapists who are able to provide support please reach out? I know it is not the easiest thing taking someone on but I am a very independent learner and would be happy to help with caseloads in whatever capacity I am able to. I am posting on here because I am not having much luck securing placements with Trusts.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to your response.
Change of career. How to become an OT? Where to start?
Hi. I'm at that moment in my life that I finally found courage to follow my dream and passion. I'm not even sure if I'm in the right place to ask, but I'm reaching out.
I'm 44 years old, done loads of different jobs through my entire life but just recently my path led me to a role as a carer. And I've found myself for the first time in my life.
I've been caring for a gentleman with MND and had an opportunity to take him to his hospital appointment with wheelchair services. What I saw there, how his new wheelchair is being tailored and built from scratch to suit his needs, that was absolutely amazing . All that problem solving and thinking outside the box. And of course being able to help another human being.
Problem is I'm from Poland. I have absolutely no knowledge about education in…
Hi there Bartek. Occupational therapy offers so much scope of practice, breadth of specialisms and opportunities to be creative and a problem-solver. You are bound to find an area of OT that suits you! Have you had a look at the A Career in Occupational Therapy page on the Hub yet?
Take a look at the FAQ, including the 'What are the entry requirements to the profession?' section. There are links to relevant external sources of information too. It would be worth you reaching out to the UK professional body (RCOT) as well, as I'm sure many others have been in a similar situation to you. Good luck with the start of an exciting journey!

I think the educational aspect of the role of occupation as a therapeutic tool for recovery. As the only OT in a mental health rehabilitation setting I have to prioritise assessment (skills and risk) and care plans. Then liase with staff to deliver/ role model interventions based on the clients goals and needs (grading and adapting of activities). A lot of health promotion, role modelling and empowering others in our specialist field.
What do you think? What setting are you in Simone?
