For UCT Occupational Therapy student and professional hip-hop dancer Nina Petersen, movement is more than a performance – it is a way of understanding people, building relationships and creating meaning. Now in her third year of study, Petersen balances academic life and clinical training with competitions, rehearsals and teaching dance. She says studying occupational therapy has broadened her understanding of how people’s health is shaped not only by illness, but also by their circumstances, relationships and everyday lives. Her training has also influenced the way she teaches young dancers, helping her become more attentive to their different ages, experiences and emotional needs. Locked inside her body, Kate could hear and see everything but could tell anyone. A worst nightmare. Kate Allatt was a fit and healthy mother of three when her life changed overnight. After being sent home from hospital with severe headaches, she collapsed and fell into a coma. When she woke, she was diagnosed with Locked-In Syndrome. Fully conscious, but unable to move or speak. In 2022, Cambridgeshire County Council collaborated with pupils from Swavesey Primary School and Swavesey Village College to produce a performance of the poem ‘Why I am Rude’, written by Sarah Dillon, National Association for Therapeutic Parents (https://www.naotp.com/). This poem aims to help adults and children to understand the 'why' behind behaviours which may be seen or described as rude, when actually, it is often a defence mechanism. There may be trauma, attachment or adverse childhood events which have impacted on the child's view of themselves and those around them. These children are not rude, they are communicating their pain.

Mindfulness Meditation: 30 seconds of practice a day. Choose an activity that you do every day. For example, preparing a cup of tea, brushing your teeth, showering, driving, etc. Before beginning your chosen activity, spend 30 seconds remaining still whilst focusing your attention on your breath. At the end of the day, see how many times you have done your 30 second meditation. More importantly, consider the benefits of your meditation each night before bed. It is as important that you meditate as it is that you reflect upon its benefits.

Neuroaffirming practice (also known as neurodivergent affirming practice) has been gaining momentum in recent years in healthcare in terms of working with neurodivergent individuals. It's the idea that individuals have differences in their abilities and how they interact with the world around them – differences which are not considered to be deficits that need to be “fixed”. Rather, those who view individuals in this light consider neurodiversity to be natural. In this talk, Bryden and Katherine will share ideas and examples on how neurodivergent affirming practice can work. Bryden Carlson-Giving is a neurodivergent, doctoral student at Boston University and a pediatric occupational therapy practitioner with experience in pediatric outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Bryden’s work includes encouraging a shift away from an impairment-based perspective and returning to strengths-based, occupation-centered practices. He seeks to promote neurodivergent affirming practices, amplify the voices of the disabled community, and challenge ableism within healthcare and research. From helping individuals discover and embrace their sensory processing differences to collaborating with their family and education team to improve their ability to be neurodivergent affirming, Bryden aims to maximize his client's quality of life and well-being to support authentic, neurodivergent development. Katherine is currently an occupational therapy student who has a passion for disability justice. She is currently conducting qualitative research to assist practitioners in understanding how to utilize a neurodivergent affirming approach when working with autistic individuals who exhibit self-harm and aggressive behaviors. In the past, she has worked with adults and children with developmental disabilities. Her main goals are to improve the quality of life for autistic and other disabled people. Pearl, who is autistic, is a student of occupational therapist Gabbie Johnson on the New South Wales South Coast. She started the program after working with children in local schools and identifying a need for therapy to be delivered in a community-based setting. Welcome to Little Steps, Big Gains, In this video we are going to learn some evidence- based exercises that can improve balance and coordination in upper and lower limb ataxia through the research study, "Physical therapy for correcting postural and coordination deficits in patients with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury" "The purpose of this study was to test the effects of a conventional exercise program designed for correcting postural and coordination abnormalities in patients with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI). Using principles of motor learning applied to functional exercise training, exercises were performed while lying, sitting, standing and walking, with the goal of improving intra- and inter-limb coordination in the upper and lower extremities, postural stability and gait pattern. Twenty-two participants with TBI-related deficits received therapy in a supervised outpatient clinic. Therapy included 20 sessions, each approximately 55 to 60 min in duration, scheduled four to five times a week over four consecutive weeks. Upon completion of the therapy, participants improved static and dynamic postural stability and gait, evaluated with the Berg Balance Scale (from 45.2 ± 5.9 to 49.2 ± 4.2 points) and the Functional Gait Assessment (from 22.8 ± 4.1 to 26.9 ± 3.4 points). So perhaps there’s a good reason many people can’t escape the revolving door of criminal justice. Armed with this knowledge, brain researcher Kim Gorgens set out to find a solution – and she did. Dr. Kim Gorgens is a professor of Psychophysiology, Clinical Neuropsychology, and Psychology of Criminal Behavior at the University of Denver. She manages a portfolio of brain injury-related research--studying the reported history, cognitive function and brain biomarkers of probationers, inmates and college athletes. Her mission is to better understand the short and long-term impacts of injuring our most vital organ. She has a fridge filled with human brains, and a love of zombie movies (coincidence?). Simply put, Kim cares more about your brain than you do.
