Hi All,
Im a student at Plymouth Uni, going into my 2nd year in September. Im a little worried as I have MS and overweight on medication for the MS. We have just been sent out documentation for us to fill in regarding placements and risk assessments. I understand this is to keep us safe, but im worried they will say 'sorry Claire, due to your conditions you cant go on placement'. We have all been worried due to our placements being canceled last academic year so we are having 2 placements in year 2. What are your thoughts. Claire
Thank you for reaching out to the community here @Claire - and for opening up about your genuine concern.
Firstly, we appreciate that placements can be daunting - without coronavirus complications or your own existing health conditions. However, your honesty and confidence engaging in this space are testament to your strength and character.
Secondly, be reassured that reasonable adjustments are very common for UK students going on placements. Students complete them every year with a variety of physical and mental health challenges of their own. The documentation exists to best support you to succeed, rather than try to catch you out, or stop you from continuing your training. It is up to the placement allocator to choose a setting and service that will accommodate any concerns you have.
Thirdly, bear in mind that your university accepted you onto the course; if they had concerns about your condition affecting your chances of qualifying, this would have been flagged to you by now. Nonetheless, if you haven't already, it would be worth reaching out to a lecturer, to get some perspective and advice on your particular situation, at this particular time.
We hope these thoughts are of help. (If you feel comfortable) we could bring this forum post to the attention of fellow Members - via our social media networks, using just your first name. This could prompt faster responses from others. Up to you. All the best, The Occupational Therapy Hub Team
