I’m a student just starting out on my training to become an Occupational Therapist. I also have a disability myself and am finding it really interesting to explore the different ways of adjusting practice. I’ve come across some innovative approaches by other Occupational Therapists to work with their disability and how this can influence and change the nature of some client interactions (eg. adjustments to techniques for physical or sensory impairments, distance consultations & social media engagement).
I wondered if anyone else had any resources, experiences or thoughts to share about this?
I have been ano OT for 30years. I have met a number of OTs and PTs with disabilities. One of my best previous coworkers was an OT born with no arms. Along the way I have met PTs with lower limb deficits, Therapists with residual psychosocial disorders from head injuries. I have worked with these awesome people and learned a lot from them.
Hi Rachel, I'm a practicing OT with hearing loss, with a cochlear implant in my left ear. I ask my colleagues and patients to: face me when speaking so I can lip read, repeat when needed, tap me on the shoulder if they need my attention, etc.
Really interesting post [@Rachel Bowen] 😊 We'll share this on social media to get others involved!
