I have another question about cognitive screens applicable to the acute care environment which is related to the previous MOCA question. I have developed a brief functional cognitive screen, essentially a collection of cognitive tasks with a scoring system that can be performed by a non-impaired person in 15 minutes. I am trying to set up a research design that compares it to the MOCA but need some third measure to compare them both to. I was thinking to have people perform a specific cognitively-demanding task which can be performed in bed but can't come up with anything. Does anyone have suggestions or recommendations for a useful way to set up a comparison for research purposes? I would very much appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,
Heather Sloman, Toronto, Canada
There is new wave of geriatricians that are asking the MoCA NOT to be administered in acute medicine or surgery as it has not been standardized for the acute care population. It should be used post hospitalization. We have used the mini cog and also the functional assessment.
Hi @Heather! Just passing on some suggestions from the Hub's followers on Twitter and LinkedIn:
Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS)
ACE-3
MMSE
Clock Drawing Test (Shulman system)
Thanks to those that responded via social media. I hope a few are appropriate as a potential third measure!
I guess I am quite concerned as to why to develop another cognitive screen when there are already a lot available. Also Heather whether you have already completed research on the internal and content validity of the screen you have made and how to ensure that it is valid and reliable for the population it is going to be used with. There are a lot of cognitive screens that could be correlated to MOCA personally I would look at doing this first as these assessments ie Short Portable Mental State questionnaire, RUDAS, OCE,NuCOG, Cognitive Assessment of Minnesota and functionally the Kettle Test. Please feel free to contact me directly as have completed research in this area
Mini mental status examination.. Its quick, has good validity and reliability. All the more there are a few studies comparing MOCA and MMSE.. So u can have a strong evidence for the third one
Thanks for reaching out @Heather! We'll share this across our network this coming week, to bring it to Members' attention.
