I am attempting to scope out if there are any community learning disability occupational therapists who as part of their working contract are on an overnight on call rota?
Our service has lost their overnight on call nurses due to the closure of our assessment and treatment unit and has asked the community learning disability nurses to cover and there are discussion re: our occupational therapists being put on the rota.
Any information would be welcomed for me to take forward.
Hello @jennib276. I'm not a community LD occupational therapist, but thought I'd pass on some feedback from Sabia Y Constantinedes, Senior OT at London Borough of Waltham Forest:
'I was a community Adults LD OT for 5 years or so and worked in three boroughs. Albeit being Locum I wasn’t required to be on an all night rota nor were any of my permanent colleagues. I would only guess this being relevant in Acute LD wards? The day to day work of an LD OT although rewarding can be extremely challenging. Unless it is a part of a holistic ADL assessment whereby night time behaviour is paramount to service user’s overall treatment, I do not see a purpose for an all night Rota system for LD OTs. I feel it’s extremely important for OTs to retain these boundaries as our profession is already one that’s misunderstood and taken for granted by many including other professionals. Stepping into this rota system may further blur the speciality, responsibilities and role of a community LD OT.' Hope this is a helpful perspective. I've added a link to her LinkedIn account above, should you wish to contact her.
