Hi folks,
First time poster here :)
I have just been offered a place on the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre registration) at the University of Brighton, UK. I'm thrilled, but also very much questioning if it's the right time for me to accept...
Some background:
I'm currently living in Australia but returning to live in the UK this August. The course starts on the 4th September. I haven't studied OT before, my first degree was a Bachelor of Arts 15 years ago, but I have been working as a music therapist in healthcare and community settings for the past 10 years, alongside OTs and other healthcare staff. I'm very rusty when it comes to study! But, I'm extremely passionate about OT and know it's the field I want to go into. I have two young children in school. I'm questioning if I should start the course this September, and just get on with it...or leave it until next year.
Does anyone have any insight on studying a masters in OT and how challnging it is?
I am fully expecting it to be hard work (the interviewer's words!) and very intense. I know it's a question only I can really answer, but thought I'd throw it out for any advice/similiar experiecnes!
Thank you :)
Amy
Hi Amy, I completed an Msc Pre reg at Plymouth uni in 2017. Admittedly it was very challenging, especially being the first year of delivering it. Despite this I have never regretted my decision and feel it was the best thing I ever did. I learnt lots of skills in academia and autonomous working, which I had not been expecting. It was also great that being a condensed course there wasn't a commitment of 3 years, allowing me to qualify sooner, I would recommend giving it a go, there is often the option of dropping the Msc dissertation part if that feels too much. Best of luck. Abigail

Hello Amy, My name is Nicola. I am currently in 2nd year MSc OT at Coventry University. I am 46 years old and my first degree is in Business management & leadership. I decided on a career change and OT fit with my desire to empower people. Yes this course is intense, however, absolutely worth it. ultimately I sense from what you say this is absolutely the right path for you. You have done your research and you worked alongside other OTs (something I had not), It will go quicker than you think, when times feel tough remember to be kind to yourself. From what you say you will make a fantastic OT. Whether it is the right time for you, only you can answer that. There are five mature students on my course all with other responsibilities we have been supporting each other which has helped us all get through the course. For me personally is was important to have a good supportive network. Feel free to ask me questions.
