New stroke recommendations: Visual/visual perceptual disorders

New stroke recommendations: Visual/visual perceptual disorders (OT Circles on The Occupational Therapy Hub)

The European Stroke Organization has issued first recommendation document on management of visual and visual perceptual disorders after stroke. It calls for systematic early screening and wider implementation of evidence-based strategies. It emphasises that rehabilitation requires coordinated care from neurologists, neuropsychologists, orthoptists and occupational therapists. "Recommendations should help expand use of recovery methods, such as visual scanning training and prism adaptation, making them more accessible and beneficial."

some apps??

Hello to the entire scientific community! , I need your opinions. What IoT apps do you know of that can be used for home assistance in the field of occupational therapy?

For home assistance in occupational therapy, several IoT apps could be highly beneficial. For instance, apps like RehabTracker offer tracking and scheduling for exercises, while Health Mate by Withings can monitor vital signs and physical activity. Wellness Assistant provides reminders for medication and appointments, and Aira connects visually impaired users to remote assistants for help navigating their surroundings. These tools can make therapy more accessible and efficient for patients at home.

'6 Ways to Increase Neuroplasticity'

'6 Ways to Increase Neuroplasticity' (signposted in OT Circles, on The Occupational Therapy Hub)

"You can’t teach an old dog new tricks" might be the most damaging myth we tell ourselves about aging.

Hello fellow neuro-enthusiasts! I recently came across an article on one of my favourite topics - neuroplasticity - by neuroscientist Dr Dominic Ng. It's very accessibly written and is applicable to us all, so I thought it was worth signposting to you!

Dr. Ng outlines six 'evidence-based ways to keep your brain young, adaptable and primed for growth'. You can read all about them via the link above; I've picked my highlights from each below:

  1. Stay Connected 'A 2023 Nature Aging study found that older adults with regular weekly social contact had 30-50% lower dementia risk compared to isolated peers.'
