From birth, humans use their hands for all daily activities. This makes the development of hand skills a crucial part of a child's development. The ability to use their hands is influenced by direct experiences and is learnt from infancy.

Several components influence a child's abilities within this domain. Developing a dominant hand when working is a developmental milestone. Beyond use of the right or left hand, a tendency to use one of them for task engagement also influences the nervous system.

This infographic series draws on relevant literature and uses clear imagery to illustrate the function and usefulness of the hand, including handedness and hand performance.
