Hello,
I am a student looking into occupations through the lifespan and I'm looking for research on typical occupations in midlife (40-65). Finding it really diffcult to find results and wondered if anyone had read anything within the last 10 years that's relevant?
Thanks
Hi @Ben. Here are a few responses from followers across The Occupational Therapy Hub's network:
Michelle: Look at the research into transitions. There's a lot around retirement too.
Mitch: Women's Occupations after children leave for university might show up some things.
Poonam: Check out resources from logging in through your AOTA account into CJOT & AJOT (Canada and Australia); they’re linked free and should have a plethora of info. Next check out OT Potential with Sarah Lyon for resources listed by metadata value.
Virginia: You may find more under changes in occupation, as in second careers. As people are living longer - and as the economy changes - people are having to work longer, which often means changing vocations like I did, at age 50. My husband did the same thing 10 years before. Or target a group. I'd look through the Psychology Studies on Women. For example, women are putting careers first and having children later in life. Therefore everyday IADLs may be different from a woman who started her family earlier. I remember reading a lot about elders picking up new or previously done occupations in their later years, in Psychology across the Lifespan class. Since you are male, perhaps you want to research men with second, younger families. I haven't looked, but I imagine the information is there. Hope this helps. Good luck. I'm waiting on my second field work for OTA now myself.
Yes that would be great thanks.
