Looking for different roles in OT

Hello, I've been working for the NHS for just over 2 years now (qualified 2020), I love occupational therapy but I'm finding it harder to align my heart and head with OT in this setting. More and more I'm thinking about non traditional roles but struggling to work out a route and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or advice? Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Chelsy, I have had a very varied career with some less traditional roles. I have always kept an open mind when looking for jobs and considered whether it fits with my own occupational identity rather than that of the NHS perception. I have worked in substance misuse in a prison and in 3 brand new services where I have had scope to develop my own role. Happy to chat.

OT Roles in Puberty and Adolescent

Dear fellow OTs,

In year 2016 UNICEF hosted The Adolescence Brain: A second windows of opportunity symposium. As mention in the UNICEF website in this stage of development brain changes significantly and forms tons of new connections. It affected a lots more f aspects in life.

OT as a professional who helps person to functional with his/her limitations also face some challenges when work with adolescents. Preparing client and family for puberty then another activities in teenage life like prom night, going to concert or club are few things that we have to pay attention to.

Please share your experience about working with client and/or family to prepare the puberty and teenage life.

Interesting diagrams and useful points to consider. In community adult mental health I work with lots of adolescents struggling with life and educational stressors and social demands. In my role it is about helping individuals prioritise their vocational goals, and develop ways to manage stress through meaningful occupations or developing support networks.

Capstone Questions on Nutrition and Rehabilitation

The following is a continuing education (CE) course that has been developed as part of a OTD Capstone to increase awareness of the impact of nutrition on the health and wellness of older adults. This capstone propose OTs take an active role in addressing nutrition challenges in clinical and community settings. Response to the included questions is appreciated and will be added to the capstone manuscript and used to enhance this CE course.

The Nutrition and Rehabilitation CE course has been developed to provide education and training on effective integration of nutrition into skilled occupational therapy services as best-practice nutrition screening and interventions to positively impact older adults who live in the community.

The purposes of this course are to:

ยง Give a basic knowledge of nutrition as it relates to rehabilitation and wellness to OT providers who provide skilled treatment to older adults in the communities.

OT practitioners working in Domestic Abuse - making connections?

I'm new to studying an MSc OT in the UK. My background is in crisis work around domestic and sexual violence and abuse. I'm particularly interested in how OT can be used for recovery and support with survivors of DVA. I would love to connect with other students or practitioners working in, or interested in, this area and join (or develop) a professional network.

I am aware of a one local charity in Northampton (UK) that launched an OT led service for women survivors of DVA in a refuge setting, however I haven't been able to find any other services specifically offering OT for DVA survivors. Perhaps much of this is being done within LMHTs?

Update March 2024: I'm now qualified and working in mental health. I'm still keen to develop a professional network. Please see latest posts.

Hi Gill, thank you so much for getting this OTDV conversation started. I've read the report from the Bevan Commission and the fantastic work being pioneered by Lucy Clarke and Kim Jones in Wales. Hopefully we can help to expand their ripples on the silent pond of DV.

I'm on a pre-reg Masters and planning my dissertation. Current thought was occupational disruption/marginalisation for post-partum women experiencing urinary incontinence. Important and overlooked but feel much more passionate about DV survivors and freeing occupational potential as part of recovery. Hopefully we can set up a call and get involved via WhatsApp group. Let me know when you're free to meet (virtually). Vic x
